my springer spaniel

hey i recently got a springer spaniel and hes amazing except hes really jealous of my pug and is so mean to him sometimes my bf thinks hes jealous but i dont want him to start beng that way towrds people any ideas to get him to calm down

he does need to learn to be equal if not second to the pug

sometimes you're able to keep the springer on a leash and walk him around the pug and have your bf give the pug attention and if the springer makes a move jerk the leash and make him stay beside you, then switch places with your boyfriend so he doesn't get confused on you don't want him interfering with the pug's love

then try to love on them both at the same time (both of you loving on both of them but keep the leash on the springer) makesure if he makes a move push him to the floor (belly up) makesure he can't flip over and hold him there (maybe each of you one hand) so you can have him in that submissive pose while he sees you petting the pug then let him up and pet both of them again

Your dog is NOT jelous. There is a relationship between your dogs that you might not understand. There are two types of dogs in the relationship, the Alpha dog, and the submissive dog. Make sure your not giving too much attention to one dog and not enough to the other. Also, attempting to correct what you think is 'mean' behavior in your alpha dog will actually make it worse, and your little alpha will think he needs to be tougher on the dog to have control. The alpha dog thing is a neccessary part of your dogs life. However if your dog does start acting that way towards humans (high unlikely) then contacting an animal therapist/behavior specialist might help.!

Do you give more attention to your pug? Hummm thats wierd b/c usually when you introduce new pets to the family .. usually the new one is more friendly and the older pet is usually jealous.
How did you introduce them? I know there is a proper way to introduce new pets to the family. I would try to check Casear Milan's website or the Animal Planet website b/c they have several dog trainers that will have insight on your dogs aggressive behavior. 10 Jul 2009 / 0 Reply answer
