How do I lighten my hair to blonde and avoid brassiness?

I understand that part of the reason hair turns “brassy” when you are trying to lighten it to brown is that hair has a natural lightening cycle (black to brown to red to orange, etc). Right now, my hair is a (faded) burgandyish color (more of a brown/auburn color now). In December, I want to lighten it to a light blonde color.

I have experience dying my hair from dark to light, but I’m wondering how I can prevent the brassiness. I was wondering if stripping the hair color before dying it with a blonde shade will help prevent this. Should I go with an ash color afterwards? Do you have any other suggestions? (Dying it professionally is not an option)

Thanks for the help!

first if you call aroud some places can be pretty cheap to do all over color on short hair : P like headstart and greatclips

i know you can use any that have bleach in them (my mom always uses frosting kits) they work well for short hair. avoid direct sun on your hair if you can or add a protectant or a hat/scarf when you go outside. avoid swimming in pools the clorine can turn it green lol

Add a color corrector to you hair dye. i believe to prevent the brassiness you will need the dark purple corrector. you can ask the beauty supply store just to make sure....they should have all the color correctors up there. but this will not harm your blonde that you are trying to get too so don't worry. 22 Oct 2009 / Reply answer / 0
